Dachs to don green and gold as Aussies head for sunny Brazil
FUTSAL: Martin Dachs is set to head off on his first ever overseas trip, unperturbed by the fact his first experience outside his home country will be to represent it.
An eight-man squad is about to jet off to the beauty of Brazil as part of an Australian Futsal team.
From playing here on the courts of the YMCA to representing Inter Club in the outdoor game, it's a dream realised for Dachs.
"We had to get a school team together and go play down in Toowoomba. It was sort of a competition as well as a trial.
"From there I went with several other boys to nationals in Brisbane at the Entertainment Centre. Then you get selected to be part of the Australian team and we're going to play in Brazil.
"I'm proud of myself. I couldn't thank Mum and Dad enough because they paid for the whole thing, which was very expensive.”
He'll be one of five Queenslanders to throw on the green and gold, with two other team mates also out of Sydney and a goalkeeper from Victoria.
Given their inability to train as a unit to date, the team will essentially be thrown on a court together for the first time when they land in Brazil.
"It's going to be very tough competition. One of the coaches has been telling us 'you better be prepared for all of it'.
"We will play in their national sort of league over there. We'll also being playing against regional sort of teams and their futsal academies as well.
"I'm excited. I'm keen for the challenge,” Dachs said.
Stanthorpe has a penchant for turning out quality futsal players - with Holly Hitchener, Brody Pearce, Danika Newman, Isaac Neill and Ernesto Hernandez also representing Australia.
