End of an era for three decade business

AFTER nearly three decades serving the community Chris Binge has decided to focus on a new chapter in his life.

Twenty-seven years ago he opened Chris's Carpet, Blinds and Tiles Warehouse. In just a couple weeks, the business will be no more.

"We just decided to pull the pin," Mr Binge said.

"At the end of the day we've got other things we want to do."

Though he had planned on sticking around a little while longer, a disagreement over the life of a lease brought the schedule forward.

"We just wanted a shorter lease but they wanted us to sign another long term one and it was going to be increased (rent) as well and we thought that's something we couldn't cope with."

But with the support of wife Helen, Mr Binge has come to terms with his decision to call it a day.

"We were about 17 odd years down in Roger St and out here (New England Highway at Applethorpe) for about 10 years.

"We've had some good repeat customers over the years that have followed us and we've got to thank them for their loyalty."

SO LONG: After 27 years in business Chris Binge will close the doors on his carpet and blinds store.

While mostly running the show solo, he did get some help over the years. He singled out Paul Zamprogno and John Tomkins as "main stays" who supported him.

"They were always really good to us here."

Mr Binge got his start with T&J Floor Coverings in Tenterfield where he did his apprenticeship.

He spent some time in Brisbane before he and Mrs Archibald-Binge opted to return to their roots.

"When Ella (daughter) was born we wanted to bring her up in the country."

Drought has deterred some interested buyers he admits, but believes it's still very much a viable industry going forward.

"You 'don't know what effect the drought is going to have over the next one or two years.

"The last couple of years have probably been the busiest we've had ever so still plenty happening in Stanthorpe.

"We have had a few stressful times like anyone in business but we feel we've come out the other side and done alright."

The doors will close on November 30 and Mr Binge said they'll be getting rid of remaining stock for cheap.
