FINALS TIME: Opponents sorted for Saturday
SATURDAY will see a repeat of the 2018 A-grade grand final with Stanthorpe United looking to retain its title against Ballandean.
Stanthorpe City were dealt a cruel blow on Saturday, when they were ousted from the competition.
The men in orange had led the competition for most of the season, claiming the minor premiership on goal difference over United.
But two losses on the trot has seen them eliminated. First they fell to a three-nil loss to United in the major semi-final, only to be bested by Ballandean one-nil in the preliminary final.
In an end-to-end game that never slowed, Ballandean held it together to sneak past City.
"We probably had the upper hand during the opening stages but allowed the game to slip a little as City picked up the pressure,” Ballandean coach, Neil Newman said.
The deadlock was broken courtesy of a fortuitous goal from a corner.
Ben Rametta whipped it in, only for Rob Coelli to get a connection to deflect it goalward. There was little City keeper Ed Filmer could do to stop it from crossing the line.
City shook off the cobwebs at half time and came out in the second stanza looking the more likely.
Captain Ben Staley covered plenty of kilometres, pushing for an equaliser.
But despite going close on one or two occasions, Ballandean keeper Jeremy Willoughby wasn't letting anything by him.
