Football's night of nights
AFTER a gruelling season that started in April, players, supporters, coaches and volunteers will let their hair down this Saturday for the annual night of nights.
There's still semi-finals and grand finals to be contested, but this fixture-free weekend gives everyone the chance to recuperate and celebrate the successes of the season to date.
"Football has been a part of the culture of the Granite Belt for many, many years,” Football Stanthorpe president and patron Vic Pennisi said.
"There's a long tradition that goes back as far as I can remember. I think I pulled on my boots my first year back in 1973 and it was strong then. These days every club has a full sweep of teams - just about.
"It's a real credit to the community that week in, week out they can put out those teams to compete in the competition,” Pennisi said.
This year's Football Stanthorpe presentation night has had a change of venue, with the event to be held at St Joseph's Bathersby Centre.
"This is a great way to recognise achievement and it brings all clubs together in the one room and shows that goodwill between competitors,” Pennisi said.
"It's going to be another night where hard work gets rewarded. I think football in Stanthorpe is well placed to go into the future.”
Pennisi, who will also MC the night, has congratulated the hard work of Amy Torrisi for pulling the event together.
As for individual awards, he said there would never be a perfect process, without debate, in which they selected winners.
"There is no perfect way. It is a challenge. It'll never be a perfect process.
"Can I guarantee you everyone will be happy? No, I can't.”
No matter who wins, Pennisi promises a great night.
The night will get under way from 5pm, for a 5.30pm start. Attendees are asked not to park in the church car park.
Catering will be done by Cafe 77 and a bar will be in operation all night.
