Gremlins conquer the Danes in stellar bout

RUGBY LEAGUE: On the back of a fine all round performance by half-back Regan Sullivan, the Stanthorpe Gremlins out-manoeuvred the Pittsworth Danes on Sunday in a 30-26 win away from home.

Sullivan was voted "Player's Player” in the Gremlins third win from five games in the TRL Clive Berghofer 2nd Division competition that now has them in fifth place on the competition ladder.

Coach Gary Skimmings was more than happy with the result. "It was one tough game, Pittsworth are the strongest side we have encountered so far this season.”

In a game where Stanthorpe raced to an early lead of 10 - 0 after just seven minutes courtesy of tries by Regan Sullivan and winger Lachlan Swan, the match scoreboard see-sawed as both sides toiled tirelessly in their efforts to take control.

The Gremlins were outsized by the Danes big forwards, but Skimmings rated the performance of his hard working pack highly. "Our forwards laid the platform for the result.”

Lock forward Matthew Hendry and back-rower Floyd Oxford were two in the Gremlins pack to shine throughout, along with fullback Jacob Adams in the Gremlins high performing backs.

After Stanthorpe's early surge on the scoreboard, the Danes found their feet in front of their home crowd to run in three tries to be front-runners 14 - 10 after eighteen minutes of the first stanza.

Fullback Jacob Adams scored untouched under the goal posts after supporting five-eight Jarrod Irwin who sliced through the defence.

Adams converted his own try to allow his side to take a 16 - 14 lead eight minutes out from half time.

The Gremlins were reduced to twelve soon after when Nathan Stibbard was sin-binned.

While they defended feverishly in the final minutes of the half, including an outstanding try saving tackle by fullback Adams close to the try line, the home side Danes cashed in with a touchdown in the final minute of the half.

The Gremlins had plenty on their plate trailing 16 - 20 at the break, and the Danes added to their total soon after the restart with a try to lead 26 - 16. The tide started to turn when centre Brad Britton scored the first of three Gremlins tries in the grandstand corner.

Jacob Adams and Regan Sullivan were Britton's fellow try-scorers over a ten minute spell dominated by Stanthorpe to have them ahead on the scoreboard 30 - 26 with seven minutes to play.

The scoreline saw both sides giving all they had in the hectic final stages of the game, but Stanthorpe finished the better to seal a valuable victory.
