Health insurance premiums set to rise another 6%

PREMIUMS for private health insurance are set to rise about 6% from next month, despite the Turnbull government's efforts to limit the rises.

The average annual premium increase has been more than 5% for the past six years and more than 6% in the past two years.

Heath Minister Sussan Ley said yesterday that after she wrote to insurers asking them to limit the rises, she believed she had saved an average family about $166 a year.

But the average industry rise next month will still be 5.59% and most premiums will increase between 5% and 7%.
