Hitting the new season for a six

CRICKET: Australia’s Ashes success could bode well for the region’s cricket season which is due to kick off on October 12.

The region’s five cricket teams — Souths, Wanderers, Valleys, RSL and Tenterfield — will go head to head in a 16-round competition.

Stanthorpe Cricket’s new president Ben Staley said he was hoping for a membership boost this year, inspired by the recent Ashes series between Australia and England.

“It would be really good to get more new players this year,” said Mr Staley.

“We actually pulled back the age bracket (previously) so we can have players aged from 14 to men’s because we noticed a decline in the older juniors.

“The new age bracket is really good because we get a lot of father and son combinations where the son is 15 and the dad is 40 and they can play together.”

Father and son duo on the Souths team will be Mark Lanza and his 17-year-old-boy Liam.

Mr Lanza said his older sons Hayden, 24 and Jordon, 19, had also been through the club as juniors before joining the men’s.

“It’s a good sport we can play together and cricket is a lot more forgiving (for older players).”

The five clubs will play each Saturday from 12.30pm, with the team that finishes the season at the top of the ladder going straight into the grand final which was won by Valleys last year.

Second and third will play off against each other to claim a spot in the grand final.

Mr Staley said the Stanthorpe Cricket Club had among the best facilities in the region because of the dedication of club members.

“We’ve got good people who put in a lot of hard work over the years to create great facilities,” he said.

“We have two turf wickets which is good for a small town and a great clubhouse.”

Mr Staley said each of the clubs was eager to welcome new players who are encouraged to sign on via Cricket Australia’s MyCricket website.
