SWIMMING: Standing atop the podium 10 times was more than Ben Armbruster could have hoped for when he headed off to the School Sport Australia titles.

Armbruster travelled to Melbourne on July 28-31 to compete in the School Sport Australia 13-19 years Swimming Championships, where he had qualified for 11 events.

He had six individual events and five relays on his schedule, 16 races in all, including heats and finals.

Not only did he take home 10 medals, he was named the Queensland team's 'Male Swimmer of the Meet'.

"I wasn't expecting to bring home that many medals,” Armbruster said. "It felt pretty good.

"I knew I could probably medal in some of the events, but not that many.”

Out of 11 events, he only narrowly missed a medal in the 200m individual medley, finishing fifth.

He picked up three golds - for the 200m mixed medley relay, 200m 17-19yrs boys freestyle relay and 500m mixed freestyle relay.

He nabbed silver medals in the 17-19yrs 100 butterfly and 17-19yrs 50m backstroke and five bronze medals in the 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly, boys 4x50 medley relay and 4x100m freestyle relay.

"I was a bit surprised to be named Queensland Swimmer of the Meet.”

It was the fourth time Armbruster has competed at the national titles, but he never reached the same level of success.

"Everyone was very, very happy.”

Not only did he have family poolside, his coach Gail Smail travelled down to cheer him on.

"It was wonderful for her to see her swimmer achieve at this high level in the off season for the Stanthorpe Pool,” Ben's mum, Shannon Armbruster said.

He'll now compete in the DDRSA Short Course Championships this weekend with fellow Stanthorpe Swimming Club members William Kay, Isaac Kay, Ella McGlashan, Jessica Pradella and Lillian Kendall.

Selling himself short, Ben said he'll be happy with "a couple placings”.
