Next gen targeted in new program

FOOTBALL: The next generation of Stanthorpe footballers are being offered the opportunity to learn, younger than ever before.

This Thursday night sees the commencement of the inaugural Incy Wincy Spiders Football Program.

The program is an introductory lesson to football being offered to kids from ages three to six years.

Renowned footballing identity, Richard "Mr Magic” Mitchell has been brought in to facilitate the seven-week initiative.

Steve McEvoy said Mitchell has the perfect mix of experience and personality to help teach the youngsters in a fun environment.

"We identified a gap in that area a numbers of years ago and thought well lets see if we can fill that void,” McEvoy said.

"We spoke to Richard Mitchell about his availability and he was happy to do it.

"We believe there's a lot of kids out there that are 3, 4 and 5 years old who watch their siblings play every week and go to training every week and they want to get involved too.

"So here's an opportunity to get involved and learn the basic skills of the game.”

Mitchell has experience at the highest levels of the game in Queensland and is currently employed by Toowoomba Grammar as a coach.

"Richard has the personality where he's been doing this for quite some time and knows how to keep them entertained.

"Then next year or so when they're ready to play they've got that distinct understanding of what football is about,” McEvoy said.

The program will run every Thursday night from 4-4.45pm for the next seven weeks.

"If successful we'll certainly look at introducing again next year and maybe a little earlier in the season.”

The program is open to any child.

There's a cost of $50 per kid, which also comes with a shirt and ball.

It will be run at the International Club.
