Numbers needed to ensure softball goes ahead
SOFTBALL: The clock is ticking for player’s to sign up for this seasons Granite Belt Softball competition.
With play set to start next Monday evening (October 14), teams are being encouraged to get their nominations in.
Last year’s competition had eight teams participate, but to date only three have registered for this season.
Granite Belt Softball president Nita Caslick said it was worrying, but she hoped more would get in late.
“At least six teams are needed otherwise we’ll look to see if we just turn it into a social competition.”
Games are hosted at C.F White Oval from 6pm.
“Unfortunately it’s not looking great right now but we’re hoping for a few more teams so the season can go ahead,” Ms Caslick said.
“Maybe the fact it’s more about fun than being too competitive might have put some people off playing.”
She says drought and money might be a factor in people not signing up, but said registration is reasonably priced.
“The most an adult will pay is $95. All the gear is provided. You don’t need anything,” she said.
“It’s so much fun to get out there and meet new people. It’s good exercise as well.”
Player’s as young as 11 can participate, so long as a parent plays alongside them, making it a real family sport.
“We prefer 12 year olds and up but we do take 11 year olds if the parents are playing.
“We had a few last year who did that.
“People can sign up either as individuals or part of a team. We had a few last year who just signed up as individuals and we found them a team.
“Everyone is really welcoming.”
