Riders brave chill for postponed dam ride
CYCLING: It might have been blustery and temperate but riders still travelled hours to take part in this year's That Dam Ride.
Some participants had made the early morning journey from Brisbane and the Gold Coast on Saturday to line up for the annual fundraising ride.
After being postponed in February owing to the bushfires, organisers got things together to ensure it still went ahead in 2019.
While numbers were somewhat down, organiser Dan Cuthbert was still pleased nonetheless.
"It went great. The weather wasn't too favourable though. Got a little shower of rain and it got quite cool toward the end,” he said.
"Importantly, everybody finished and there were no crashes or incidents at all which was good.”
A good portion of the registered riders had come from outside the area, with Mr Cuthbert saying it offers them something they can't get in the city.
"There's not much traffic and it's a bit more challenging with the hills out here. Brisbane and the Gold Coast is a bit more flat and I think maybe they get sick of the same thing.
"Stanthorpe's a nice place to visit and the scenery along the ride is pretty good.”
Participants were given a choice of four different distances. All monies from the day go to Stanthorpe Lions who will distribute within the community.
Next year's event is being held in conjunction with Apple and Grape Harvest Festival. Mr Cuthbert said it'll likely be held on the last Sunday of February.
