Queensland border blunder attracts ridicule
WELCOME to the not-so-smart state where an embarrassing spelling mistake on a sign depicting the Queensland border has left the City of Gold Coast red-faced.
A sign reading "State Boarder Queensland" was hastily replaced today after catching the attention of unimpressed locals.
Erected at Kent Street, Coolangatta several days ago, Tweed Daily News readers immediately identified the glaring spelling mistake, with photographs of the dodgy sign posted on social media.
"New GC council sign Coolangatta. Proofed by a surfer?" asked Dani Rose Albert.
The sign, which featured in media reports, was hastily replaced by council staff today, with a sign featuring the correct spelling of "border" erected in its rightful place.
A City of Gold Coast spokesperson defended council's mishap.
"The City produces thousands of signs each year, a mistake was made but it has now been fixed," the spokesperson said.
Under the leadership of former premier Peter Beattie, Queensland attempted to coin the phrase "Smart State" on its vehicle registration plates but was soon shouted down by irate residents who preferred the old tag line of "Sunshine State".
