Victory still eludes Gremlins

RUGBY LEAGUE: The spoils of victory again eluded the Stanthorpe Gremlins on Saturday, a much-needed success denied in the Southern Downs local derby when they were beaten 26-18 by the Texas Terriers in a closely fought tussle at Texas league headquarters Reg Saunders Oval.

In their third fixture victory of the season, the Terriers try total as the full-time siren sounded was just one ahead of the Gremlins, five to four, firming the victors fifth place position on the Clive Berghofer Land Sales Second Division premiership ladder.

The Gremlins are fourth on the ladder, level with Texas on seven premiership point's but enjoying a better for and against.

It's been a lengthy win drought for Stanthorpe who haven't posted a win since their Round 5 win over Valleys back in late April.

Terriers former Toowoomba Valleys hooker Bryce Whale opened the home side points account in the opening minutes touching down for a 6-0 lead.

The Gremlins replied through winger Chris Reid soon after to level the scoreboard ledger at 6-6.

When five-eight Bennett Sutton crossed for a four-pointer in the 14th minute it signalled a Texas point scoring surge that had them ahead 22-6 with half-time approaching.

The home crowd rose to the occasion as centre Kerrod Rigney and fullback Declan Spencer scored, contributing to a dominant first half Terriers performance.

Centre Jacob Adams kept the Gremlins in touch when he scored just shy of the mid-match break to trail 10-22.

The game closed quarters in the second stanza as both sides battled for supremacy.

The Gremlins advancing their cause after 13 minutes when halfback and Toowoomba Clydesdales representative Regan Sullivan claimed a try.

Still trailing 14-22 and with 20 minutes to play, the Gremlins needed to score urgently if they were to be any chance to reap premiership points.

Winger Daniel White gained plenty of popularity when he touched down adding to the Texas total and 26-14 lead.

The Gremlins were in the game to the final hooter, lock forward Michael Marini collecting a try in the final stages but it wasn't enough to wrestle the match laurels from the Terriers.

Coach Megsy Irwin has time on his side as he plans his Gremlin's side's focus on the pathway to the finals series.

The team now faces three bye rounds before coming up against Valleys in Round 17 on Saturday, August 3, at Sullivan Oval.
