Girl, 15, fights for life after late night 'cowardly attack'

UPDATE 2.30PM, WEDNESDAY: AN 18-YEAR-OLD woman and 16-year-old girl have been remanded in custody after being charged in relation to an alleged assault of a 15-year-old girl in Warwick on Tuesday.

The woman and girl had their matters adjourned via a phone link with Goondiwindi Magistrates Court today for the purposes of making a bail application.

The 16-year-old Warwick girl has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and grievous bodily harm, while the 18-year-old Wilsonton woman has been charged with grievous bodily harm.

They have been scheduled to reappear in court in Toowoomba tomorrow.

UPDATE 12PM, WEDNESDAY:  A WARWICK teen remains in intensive care after being brutally attacked in the early hours of Tuesday morning. 

Staff at the Princess Alexandra Hospital this afternoon confirmed the 15-year-old victim was in a critical but stable condition in the ICU.  

Police reported the girl received multiple punches and kicks to the head in the assault at 2am on Percy St. 

The teen underwent emergency brain surgery yesterday after being airlifted from Warwick and was placed into an induced coma. 

Hospital staff could not confirm whether she was still in a coma.  

UPDATE 9AM, WEDNESDAY: AN 18-YEAR-OLD woman charged in relation to the alleged assault of a 15-year-old girl in Warwick will appear at Goondiwindi Magistrates Court this afternoon via video link.

The Wilsonton woman was yesterday charged with grievous bodily harm and remains in custody at Warwick watch house with a 16-year-old Warwick girl who was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and grievous bodily harm in relation to the incident.

Both the woman and the girl were allegedly involved in the assault of a Warwick girl at 2am on Tuesday on Percy St. 

A 17-year-old male who was helping police with their enquiries yesterday is now being treated as a witness and has been released been police.

UPDATE 6AM, WEDNESDAY: POLICE have charged a girl and a woman following investigations into the alleged assault of a 15-year-old girl in Warwick early Tuesday morning.

A 16-year-old Warwick girl has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and grievous bodily harm.

An 18-year-old Wilsonton woman has been charged with grievous bodily harm. She is due to appear in Warwick Magistrates Court on October 11.

UPDATE, 4.40PM, TUESDAY: POLICE have revealed details of a "cowardly attack" that has left a 15-year-old Warwick girl fighting for her life in hospital.

The teenager was walking with her friend, a 16-year-old girl, from a party some distance from where she was assaulted on Percy St at about 2am. 

Another male friend had been with them at the party and they were on their way to his home when three attackers, known to the pair, are alleged to have approached the girls near the corner of Canning St.

Warwick Detective Sergeant Darren Tambyln said the girl was punched and kicked in the head repeatedly while she lay on the ground.

"For someone to do this is a cowardly act," Det Sgt Tamblyn said.

"Investigations do indicate that all involved were known to each other but there's nothing to suggest what may have motivated them to do this.

"The girl's friend had fled to the other friend's home to find help and call for help.

"When she took flight a shift worker returning to Warwick from Wacol saw the attack and stopped to provide first aid and call the police."  

Det Sgt Tamblyn said the three attackers fled the scene when the man turned his car around to help. 

A QAS spokeswoman earlier today confirmed the teen was complaining dizziness and had suffered injuries when she was first taken to hospital.

Through the night her condition deteriorated quickly and she was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane at 9am. 

"She has now undergone emergency surgery for a brain injury and she remains in an induced coma," Det Sgt Tamblyn said.

"Her condition will continue to be monitored over the next 72 hours.

"There is nothing to suggest there was alcohol involved with the victim but investigations are ongoing.

"There is nothing to suggest the assault was sexual in nature."

Det Sgt Tamblyn said after speaking with the victim, police had located three people described to be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island in appearance.

"Two 16-year-old juveniles and a 17-year-old male are in the Watchhouse at Warwick and are assisting police with their enquiries," he said.

"No charges have been laid at this stage. We expect charges to be laid later this afternoon."

EARLIER, 2PM TUESDAY: A WARWICK teenager is fighting for her life in a Brisbane hospital after a serious assault in the Rose City overnight.

Police were called to Percy St at about 2am where the 15-year-old was reportedly assault by a group of people.

She was taken to Warwick Hospital before being airlifted to Brisbane where she is being treated for life-threatening injuries and remains in a serious condition.

Officers remained on scene today to progress investigations.

Police are appealing for public assistance following the assault.
